Union County, NC government: less spending, less taxes, less government

By Oscar Y. Harward

Diversification in politics is healthy for any open and free Constitutional system of government. What is so appealing is that all are welcomed to see and express their diverse views. I often tell people that if we as men were all alike, we would all be after the same woman. The same may apply to women being in pursuit of the same man.

As I continue to express my personal views, some others disagree and counter my opinions that are healthy and acceptable. Some of these counter views were addressed in the local media. http://enquirerjournal.com/view/full_story/11176610/article-Letters-for-January-30--2011?instance=latest_articles

In response to the above referenced editorial, I addressed the Union County, NC Commissioners’ General Election votes of November, 2010; you must see the 3 J’s defeated their other closest contender by more than 2.5 to 1 votes. Could the election results “represent” a “change” from the activity of the most previous Union County Commission majority? http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC/Union/22670/40532/en/summary.html

With my response that followed, another gentleman countered my response. In this gentleman’s comments, he mentioned that Kim Rogers received 58,269 votes and Tracy Kuehler received 50,506 in their 2008 General Election. So good, so true; however, the gentleman failed to mention that there were “no” competing candidates for Union County Commissioners in the referenced 2008 General Election. It was also an election that Americans turned out in support of Barack Obama, a majority Democrat Party in North Carolina, and to more Democrat Party members on Capitol Hill. http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC/Union/8027/14015/en/summary.html

What does matter is that during the last two years, Commissioners Kim Rogers and Tracy Kuehler, along with Commissioner Lanny Openshaw as a majority-partner team, continued to reject Union County’s majority preferences. Openshaw did run for re-election in the 2010 Primary Election and was defeated by the 3 J’s via more than 2.2 to 1 in votes. http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC/Union/15795/24891/en/summary.html

In summary, Union County’s electorate, in the 2010 Primary Election and 2010 General Election, did reject the issues such as selling CMC-Union Hospital, refusing to provide Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department 360 gallons per day for sewage services, and other left-wing ideas.

Yes, I continue to say that Fox News is more “fair and balanced” than any other national TV news broadcast.

And yes, I did make a comparison to Commissioners Kim Rogers, Tracy Kuehler, and their more liberal former-partner Commissioner Lanny Openshaw to the Obama/Reid/Pelosi team as it appeared that both groups refused to accept a majority common-sense agenda. The issues continue: stop-the-spending and jobs, jobs, jobs. Don’t just utter the words. Just do it! Make it happen! With that, we will see positive results. The current majority Union County Commissioners are in the process of “making it happen”.

For Tracy Kuehler’s attempt to claim she was opposed to the wording in the resolution asking the NC General Assembly to oppose “forced” annexation may be equivalent to sitting down to dinner with a dish of stewed okra (I dislike stewed okra), only to state that he/she were opposed to the table setting.

Union County’s majority citizens are well aware of the previous left-wing government v. the current conservative new majority seeking to hold the line on taxpayers’ spending during a weakened economy. A majority of residents are pleased with the new majority Commissioners as they are imposing less spending, less taxes, less government for Union County’s taxpayers, and saving CMC-Union Hospital.

Conservative vs. Liberal

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn`t buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants your guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic is conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may compete for a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Common-sense government in Union County, N.C. vs. a left-wing agenda

By Oscar Y. Harward

Prior to the 2010 General Election, Americans continued to say “stop the spending” in all government. President Obama and the Capitol Hill Democrats rejected the call and continued to spend.

Union County, N.C.’s majority of liberal County Commissioners' primary campaign issue was to sell our Carolina Medical Center-Union Hospital. In the May, 2010 Primary Election, the voters of Union County soundly said “NO” to selling our CMC-Union Hospital. In the November 2, 2010 General Election, the voters of Union County again soundly said “NO” on selling our CMC-Union Hospital.

On December 6, 2010, newly elected Commissioner Jerry Simpson was elected Chairman of the Board. Chairman Simpson appointed Commissioner Jonathan Thomas to the CMC-Union Community Trustee Council and made other appointments for the Boards consideration. After the appointments and open discussion, the entire Board voted on and agreed with the appointments.

Just as the Obama/Reid/Pelosi team continues in Washington, the “political stupidity” from the previous two years that the Union County voters rejected on November 2, 2010 here, too, continues. During the meeting of January 18, Union County Commissioner Kim Rogers requested to be appointed on the CMC-Union Community Trustee Council with Commissioner Jonathan Thomas. Her request was based on her one-year of experience as a U.C. Commissioner on the CMC-Union Community Trustee Council. Based on my information, during the year as a Commissioner on the CMC-Union Community Trustee Council, Commissioner Kim Rogers attended only one meeting. When encouraged to attend more meetings, she allegedly said she was not interested in attending additional CMC-Union meetings.

On another issue of the day, North Carolina is one of only four of the fifty United States that allows municipalities to “force annexation” without any redress of the property owners. Union County, with the support of some local towns, is joining other counties asking the N.C. General Assembly to change this law and restrict municipalities from “forced annexation” of landowners. Union County Commissioners voted 4 to 1 to approve the resolution in support of restoring property rights. Commissioner Tracy Kuehler voted “NO”.

As I sit, listen, and evaluate the process of our newly-elected commissioners, based on common-sense government versus the left-wing agenda of the two remaining Union County Commissioners, the electorate must distinguish a disconnect from the majority.

It is so easy to evaluate the Kim Rogers/Tracy Kuehler team may be equivalent to the Obama/Reid/Pelosi team as it appears both teams seem to have their own political agenda in opposition to the majority as substantiated in the November 2, 2010 General Election.

Marvin, NC and North Carolina’s “forced annexation”

This commentary is reproduced and authorized by the author as submitted by Oscar Y. Harward

By Bob Stack, 1719 Walden Pond Lane

I am a proud resident of Union County, NC and have lived in the Walden Pond Subdivision for 17 years and North Carolina for 28 years. I am supported here with residents from 8 other neighborhoods from what some consider the west side of Union County. What I will speak of is not a Walden Pond issue… it is an issue of right and wrong.

I am here to support the resolution in favor of banning forced annexation. In North Carolina, one of only four states that allow “forced” annexations, state law requires that an area must be in need of “meaningful” and “significant” services and that the city must be in a position to provide them before they are annexed. Municipalities in North Carolina are stretching, abusing and violating the annexation statutes.

The Village of Marvin is a perfect example of the abuse of the state statutes. Marvin has no public works department and provides no water or sewer. Marvin does not maintain roads, or street lights, or street signs. There is no police, fire, rescue, post office, library, trash collection or animal control. Renting a County Sheriff’s law-enforcement officer 40 hours per week and providing administrative/planning services is not conferring significant benefits on the annexed property owners. These “shadow” services are a duplicate of what we are getting now from Union County; they are included with the taxes we currently pay. Why would anyone pay for the same services twice? Because the annexation laws are being abused by unethical government officials!!

Another example of how flawed our annexation laws are: If a neighborhood were to seek voluntary annexation they would have to gather 100% support of the affected property owners. If the same neighborhood were being annexed involuntarily then there would be no support needed since the city, town or village could force the annexation against their will. This is backwards.

There are a lot of things wrong with how are annexation laws are written. This resolution is a good place to start.

Marvin’s plan for new park, town hall, community center, security, etc. is what?

By Oscar Y. Harward

Our U.S. economy, along with almost all states, counties, cities, and towns across America are being called upon by their taxpayers to stop the spending in their own locals. Some do not understand the importance of operating within a restrained budget. Many local and states’ governing agencies’ spending are out of control. Is the Village of Marvin, N.C. one government who refuses to listen?

The Village of Marvin, N.C. currently operates on a tax rate of 5 cents on the $100 of assessed property value. It now appears the Village of Marvin may be in the process of purchasing a new parcel of land containing 28 acres for $950,000 which is now priced much lower than the original $2.5 million. One cost reduction may be that the property will not perk for sewage tanks. It also must be revealed that the referenced proposed property is outside the corporate limits of the Village of Marvin, in western Union County, N.C.

There are several major concerns with this land purchase with a mysterious and/or unexplained plan for development and its’ costs.

1. In addition to the purchase and development of a new public park, it appears the Village of Marvin plans to include a new Town Hall building and community center.

2. There are no existing plans for extending added sewage requests in the area. How does the Village of Marvin plan to service the sewage in the new park, town hall, and/or community center? Will the Village of Marvin operate a “honey wagon” for pickup and removal of sewage? Will the Village of Marvin spend more tax monies to construct a solid waste treatment system?

3. What are the expected costs of the new park purchase of equipment and its’ maintenance, the Town Hall, the new Community Center, etc.?

4. What are the plans for the Village of Marvin to prevent visitors at the park from intruding onto the private property of the lake at Walden Pond?

5. Does the Village of Marvin plan to, perhaps, take over the lake property and residents; backyards of Walden Pond with “Eminent Domain” laws?

6. Does the Village of Marvin have any plan to protect the current residents surrounding the proposed new park?

7. What are the plans for additional law enforcement protection and/or enforcement for the visitors of the park and/or after park closing hours?

8. What are the plans and how much does the Village of Marvin anticipate the increase of property taxes to the residents for funding these expenditures?

9. Could it be that the Village of Marvin plans a “force” of annexation of all Walden Pond subdivision residents to tax those and others for funding these expenditures?

10. Does the Village of Marvin anticipate using Union County, North Carolina, and/or U.S. taxpayers’ monies to purchase the property, purchase the equipment, maintain the newly planned park, construct the new town hall, new community center, etc.?

There are many “ifs” that the Village of Marvin should facilitate residents of and the surrounding communities’ residents with truthful, open, and full information.

The State of Illinois is an example as their General Assemblies passed, and Democrat Governor Pat Quinn, signed new legislation to increase income taxes by 66%.

Could it be that the Village of Marvin is just before an explosion of property tax increases and “forced” annexations?

ACLU, atheists, liberal legislators and Judges downgrading civilized society

By Oscar Y. Harward

Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour struck another attack on civility in North Carolina. Judge Baddour’s new ruling, if upheld, now forces decent, loving, and law-abiding people to accept "indecent or profane language” as the norm. Furthermore, decent, loving, and law-abiding persons may be unable to effectively prosecute and convict the “dirty-mouth” offender(s). Can you imagine what Judge Baddour’s ruling will lead to in our public schools? What are our public school teachers now going to be forced to listen to? If Judge Baddour’s ruling is based on “free speech”, how can the dispensing of “indecent or profane language” be stopped?

You may “bet the farm” that Judge Allen Babbour is another N.C. liberal Democrat.

From the Charlotte Observer: ‘“There is no longer any consensus, if there ever was, on what words in the modern American lexicon are 'indecent' or 'profane,” Baddour wrote. “A reasonable person cannot be certain before she acts that her language is not violative of this law, and it is therefore unconstitutionally vague.’” http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/01/07/1963656/judge-strikes-down-nc-ban-on-public.html

Further, based on the Charlotte Observer, ‘“Raleigh lawyer Matthew Quinn, who represented Elabanjo in her appeal, said the judge's ruling is a victory for free speech.” Elabanjo appealed her conviction with the help of the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which hailed Baddour's ruling.’

Members and/or supporters with Judeo-Christian values in all communities should be appalled at Judge Allen Baddour. All rational voters must stipulate that no member and/or supporter of the ACLU should be supported in any appointed or elective office.

Many Americans serve, or have served, our nation in the military to protect the American flag, our Constitution, and the freedoms within. Since SCOTUS’s 1962 decision to remove the Bible in public schools, our nation is being torn apart.

In 1907, SCOTUS upheld laws that defacing, public burning, trampling, and/or spitting on the American flag was Constitutional. In 1969 SCOTUS found that public burning of our American flag was “free speech”, contrary to my lessons taught in the U.S. Army. http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=394&invol=576. Today, I still believe the American flag is a revered symbol of freedom around the world.

One step at a time, atheist, the ACLU, liberals on Capitol Hill and in the states’ legislatures, liberal members of the Judiciary, and others are whittling away at our nation within and our civility.

Our federal and state legislators should be focusing on promoting Constitutional freedoms and Judeo-Christian values for honest citizens. Legislators should concentrate on solving the increasing criminal activity, funding more for police officers, prosecutors, judges, jails, etc. in protecting law-abiding citizens rather than negotiating and lessening the crimes in our courts.

The referenced ruling by Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour is another reason for the N.C. General Assembly to “return’ our Judges for election candidates in our State Judiciary to run as candidates in Primaries and General Elections representing their respective political party. Allow judicial candidates of election(s) to express their personal and legal opinion(s) on the issue(s). This will provide the electorate an opportunity to determine as to how Judges are most likely to rule facing the citizens’ issues.

GOP leadership leads as Americans continue to say, “Stop the spending”

By Oscar Y. Harward

In November, voters sent several critical messages to Washington, D.C., President Obama, and Capitol Hill. One message was to “Stop the spending”. While Americans have been screaming to “Stop the spending”, President Obama and Capitol Hill Democrats ignored the call. For their silence, the voters replaced the U.S. House from a 79 Democrat Party majority to a 49 Republican Party majority http://clerk.house.gov/art_history/house_history/partyDiv.html.

On January 5, the 112th. Congress opened under Republican Party leadership. One of the GOP’s first issue was a “Motion to Suspend the Rules and Agree” to stop the spending and vote on H. Res. 22. This resolution was for the House to cut its own Congressional budget by 5%. That cut alone will produce $35 million in savings. The vote was 410-Yes to 13-No, with 11 members failing to vote http://clerk.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.asp?year=2011&rollnumber=8.

The 13 members, all Democrats, in the House who voted “No” to “Stop the spending” are: Ackerman (NY-5), Clarke (NY-11), Conyers (MI-14), Ellison (MN-5), Filner (CA-51), Honda (CA-15), Jackson (IL-2), Lee (CA-9), Moran (VA-8), Payne (NJ-10), Schakowsky (IL-9), Towns (NY-10) and Woolsey (CA-6).

Many liberal members on Capitol Hill may continue the fight to spend (y)our taxpayers’ funds, regardless of the fact that America’s economy is in financial distress; maybe, just before a national monetary failure. These irresponsible members are repulsive, politically speaking, and if not restrained would continue to spend our nation into total bankruptcy. There is much work ahead to re-establish our Constitutional freedoms, refurbish our free economy, and defending precious social issues.

President Obama, Democrats must get on board to save our economy, and our nation.

By Oscar Y. Harward

Rising oil and gasoline costs are harming our economy. As our feeble economy attempts to rebound, President Obama and Democrat Party policies decelerate our American economy with additional taxation and regulations which increases gasoline costs; thus, creating more unemployment for workers. Many families are struggling to maintain their homes and hold their families together.

It appears that Capitol Hill Democrats’ decision for years 2001 through 2008 was to destroy America’s economy and blame George Bush. In the 2008 election year, Democrats, with the support of left-wing Media, were able to convince American voters that the economic failures were due to George Bush’s policies.

In the first place, instructions by Democrats Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Barney Frank, to change policies at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, allowed consumers to purchase homes who, otherwise, were not qualified to purchase certain homes. President Bush warned of this, in 1991 and 1993 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMnSp4qEXNM&feature=grec_index. These instructions by Sen. Dodd and Rep. Frank has led to many foreclosures.

Secondly, on April 18, 2008, President Bush asked Capitol Hill Democrats for legislation to allow offshore drilling where known oil reserves were located. Capitol Hill Democrats said no. Capitol Hill Democrats continue to say no for additional drilling for oil offshore, in ARWR, and other known oil reserves inland. Capitol Hill Democrats insist on new drilling where little or no oil has been located. Escalating oil and gasoline prices are another cause for our economic failure.

Thirdly, out-of -control spending on Capitol Hill has further damaged our economy leaving each taxpayer with a debt nearing $126,000/each. After some $2 trillion fix for our economy in 2009 and 2010 years, American consumers are being economically squeezed even more, just because of these increasing costs of gasoline.

President Obama and Democrats on Capitol Hill continue to say that drilling, recovering, and refining oil is not the answer to bringing down the prices of gasoline. That is just not true! More product supplies always reduces cost in a free and open economy.

The cure is to drill and recover our own “known oil reserves”. Capturing “known oil reserves” can create more supply, therefore reducing oil and gasoline prices, making our government “oil independent” from OPEC nations, and expand our economy.

On June 15, 2010, President Obama, reporting on the BP oil spill from the Oval Office, told America how we needed to break our dependence from oil. President Obama needs to learn that oil is a natural source of energy for a growing economy. His remarks were remindful of President Jimmy Carter in 1977. His oil policies lead to limited gasoline and lines at the pump.

America is floating in oil with our own government officials, primarily members of the Democrat Party denying Americans from capturing this natural resource. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0028-01/fs-0028-01.htm,
alone, holds 10 billion barrels of oil.

It is imperative for America and the free world to defeat terrorism at all cost. America is the world leader to defeat terrorism around the world. It may be argued that Capitol Hill Democrats are denying consumers the right to recover our own oil for refining gasoline. American consumers, by purchasing gasoline from OPEC nations, may be forced to finance the same Islamic Muslim nations’ erroneous outlaw terrorists’ armies.

America has an abundance of oil waiting to be captured underground in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, Texas, California, and Kentucky. North Dakota and Montana alone, has an estimated 3 to 4.3 billion barrels of oil.

America has more oil resources available than all of the oil in the Middle East. America has an estimated 2.3 trillion barrels of oil to serve our total needs for 300 years. America must drill now. Our known resources could make America an exporting nation rather than importing of oil. Our addiction to imported oil is now more than $4.4 trillion.

Without positive action, Former Shell Oil Company President, John Hofmeister, is saying gasoline may reach to $5.00/gallon by 2012 http://www.environmentalleader.com/2010/12/28/former-shell-oil-president-5-gasoline-in-u-s-by-2012/ . The rising cost of gasoline may completely destroy our free American economy forever, as we know it now.

Drilling, refining, and recovering oil and refining for gasoline now will create new jobs and permit the expansion of existing jobs for Americans in the workforce. This is one corrective action for President Obama and all members on Capitol Hill to complete, and to get on board with common-sense policies to save our economy and our nation.
