Some old-timers, as I, remember when many of our streets and roads around the county were very trashy. Even with legislation in the NC General Assembly passing laws in an effort to stop littering, garbage remained a problem all over our county. Trash was disposed of in visible woodlands nearby community roads.
It was about 1985 when the now late Union County Public Works Director Bill Summerlin came up with a proposal to put several “solid waste drop-off sites” around Union County for residents to take their garbage to locations in their respective communities for disposal. Our Union County Commission subscribed with Bill Summerlin’s idea. Union County’s efforts to clean-up our communities have also helped to educate us on recycling. Individuals, communities, and other organizations put together groups to assist in cleaning up our communities and our roads. Today, due to the efforts of many, our communities and our roads are cleaner and appealing.
Based on news reports, Union County Manager Cynthia Coto is recommending the closing of “solid waste drop-off sites” at Sun Valley and Piedmont and reducing the New Salem site to Saturday only. I can witness the Piedmont School “solid waste drop-off site” is a very busy location. I would believe the Sun Valley School location would be even busier.
While County staff has asked Indian Trail and Unionville officials to accept ownership of two drop-off sites inside the towns’ limits, each “solid waste drop-off sites” is used by many Union County citizens outside their corporate limits.
Additionally, the entire volunteers who make up all of our Volunteer Fire Departments with their respective communities are among the very best investments for (y)our taxpayers.
I certainly hope our Commissioners will evaluate and continue these two services for the personal health, cleanliness, fire protection, First Responders, and their added essentials for our county.
