"What the president has given to our enemies is a treasure chest of defensive weapons. Within the caves of the mountainous Pakistan/Afghanistan border, Islamofascist plotters must wonder how self-destructively corrupt their American adversaries have to be to allow such materials to land in their hands. The piece of information that may be of most value to terrorists is the government's assessment that waterboarding was 'the most traumatic of the enhanced interrogation techniquesâ?? and implicitly the most effective. ...Presumably the issue is academic since the Obama administration has officially prohibited waterboarding. There is no more valuable tool for subjects of interrogation than to know what they will be subjected to. This Week's 'Alpha Jackass' Award
This exchange occurred as part of the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearings this week:
Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL): "Last September you [Energy Secretary Steven Chu] made a statement that somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe, which at the time exceeded $8 a gallon. As secretary of energy, will you speak for or against any measures that would raise the price of gasoline?"
Sec. Steven Chu: "As secretary of energy, I think especially now in today's economic climate it would be completely unwise to want to increase the price of gasoline. And so we are looking forward to reducing the price of transportation in the American family. And this is done by encouraging fuel-efficient cars; this is done by developing alternative forms of fuel like biofuels that can lead to a separate source, an independent source of transportation fuel."
Rep. Stearns: "But you can't honestly believe that you want the American people to pay for gasoline at the prices, the level in Europe?"
Sec. Chu: "No, we don't."
Rep. Stearns: "No. But somehow, your statement, 'Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe' -- doesn't that sound a little bit silly in retrospect for you to say that?"
Sec. Chu: "Yes."

U.S. Navy Unveils New High-Tech Ship Called USS Freedom That Can Fight Pirates

The USS Freedom can go up against massive enemy fleets and is one of the fastest ships in the Navy to date.
The USS Freedom can go up against massive enemy fleets and is one of the fastest ships in the Navy to date.
The United States Navy unveiled a new high-tech ship it says can chase down pirates off the coast of Somalia faster and more aggressively than previous vessels could.
The USS Freedom can go up against massive enemy fleets and is one of the fastest ships in the Navy to date, its commander said in a FOX News "America's Newsroom" exclusive.
"It's more than an evolutionary step forward, it's a revolutionary step forward," Cmdr. Michael Doran told FOX News on Tuesday. "It's highly automated and it's very fast. ... For a piracy mission, we can go out there and cover more water with fewer ships."
The USS Freedom has a modular design and requires fewer crew members, he said — about 40 total. It can go up to 45 mph.
"What we can do is we can go out there and cover more water with fewer ships because of the sprint speed of the ship," Doran told FOX News. "We can tailor the ship to perform that counter-piracy mission."
Some are calling it the Navy's corvette.
"It is kind of like driving a sports car around," Doran said. "All of my friends have told me, 'drive it like you stole it, drive it like you stole it.'"
GOP's Coburn:Obama's Healthcare Will Devastate Seniors
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is one of the most "effective" and "Conservative" Republican on Capitol Hill. - oyh
By: Jim Meyers
Sen. Tom Coburn tells Newsmax that Sen. Arlen Specter’s switch from the GOP to the Democratic Party is an example of the “disease” infecting Washington — placing self-interest ahead of the nation.
The Oklahoma Republican, who is a medical doctor, also warns that President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan would destroy the private healthcare insurance industry and ultimately lead to the rationing of medical care.
Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella asked Sen. Coburn what he knew about Obama’s healthcare plan.
“The plan is to mandate that people have to be in coverage,” said Coburn, a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

“Number two is to create a government-run health insurance program to allow people to buy it when they can’t buy it in the market. Think about that for a minute — if you can buy something from the government cheaper than you can from the private market, the private market will cease to exist.
“And so people who have good programs today will end up having a program run by government bureaucrats from Washington rather than one that emphasizes their choice and their personal selection and their healthcare.”
Martella asked: “Is there talk about a provision to deny healthcare to certain vulnerable people, most notably the elderly?”
Coburn responded: “There’s no talk about it. But . . . the ultimate result of every government-run healthcare plan around the world is rationing. Where does most of the expenses come from? From our senior citizens. Where will we make most of the cuts? Most of the cuts will come from our payments for those senior citizens.
“So you ultimately will end up with a form of rationing that will have a tremendous impact on care.”
Coburn voted against confirming former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Martella asked why.
“Two reasons,” said Coburn.
“The first is, the assumption that somebody as a career politician has the management capabilities to run an organization like HHS is just confounding to me, and probably to most other people when they stop to think about it.
“Most politicians aren’t good managers. We wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in if they were.
“The second point is her position on late-term abortion and the fact that she can’t find it in her mind that we ought to have a second opinion . . . when we’re terminating the life of a totally viable human.”
Martella asked if Coburn is disappointed in Sen. Specter for bolting the Republican Party.
“No. What people ought to ask out of this is why do people do those kinds of things,” Coburn said.
“He was very straightforward. He said I’m changing parties so I can run for re-election, so I can still be a senator.
“And that’s the disease that infects Washington. What it tells you is that ‘me being a senator is more important than the country, the policies and the principles that I’ve run my life on, and therefore I’ll do whatever’s necessary to stay here.’
“That’s the disease. That’s why I’m a term-limited senator.” [Coburn has term-limited himself.]
Martella asked Coburn if he thinks there should be more doctors and fewer lawyers in the Senate.
“I think there should be more everything and fewer lawyers,” the senator said.
“There should be more schoolteachers, more accountants, more firemen, more retired military. What we need in Congress is to go back to the idea that . . . we lose a range of experience and perspective if the only thing you’ve ever done is hold elective office.
“We’ve assumed that people in elective office can reference past experiences to make good judgments for us, and the past experiences that politicians have is how to compromise every time to make yourself look good rather than to accomplish the greatest goals for the country.”

Conservative to lead GOP fight on court nomination
A great victory within the GOP. Sen. Jeff Sessions is a true "Conservative" Republican. We need a leader who has the ability to communicate with Americans, and to fight against the upcoming "Liberal" agenda in the Senate Judiciary and on the floor of the US Senate. - oyh

Republicans are set to name conservative Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama as their point man on President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, signaling that they won't shy away from a protracted fight despite risks of being cast as obstructionist.
Sessions' ascension as the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee comes more than 20 years after the panel rejected him for his own federal judgeship during the Reagan administration over concerns that he was hostile toward civil rights and was racially insensitive.
Ironically, Sessions would replace Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, a moderate who was one of just two Republicans in 1986 to oppose Sessions as a U.S. district court judge. Specter left the GOP last week to become a Democrat, creating the vacancy atop the committee just as Justice David Souter announced his retirement.
The choice of Sessions has excited conservatives who see him as a sharp lawyer with well-established legal views after a career as a prosecutor and Alabama attorney general.
Sheldon Goldman, a political scientist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, agreed that Sessions has a firm grasp on the issues but said making Sessions "the face of the party" for the Supreme Court nomination might not play well symbolically.
Goldman, who has written a book on judicial nominations, said Specter's defection resulted in part from the perception that the GOP has moved too far right.
"And instead of responding to that by placing a moderate as the ranking Republican, they go for a very conservative Southern Republican who represents everything that has driven Specter and other moderate Republicans out of the party," Goldman said.
Sessions is among the most conservative senators, taking hard-line positions on issues such as immigration and affirmative action.
His nomination as a judge two decades ago ran into trouble when civil rights groups complained that he had pursued politically motivated voter-fraud charges against black leaders as a U.S. attorney in south Alabama. Others came forward to say he had made racially insensitive comments, including calling groups like the NAACP "un-American" and agreeing with someone else's statement that a white civil rights lawyer was "a disgrace to his race."
Sessions said the comments were taken out of context or fabricated. He and his supporters argued that Democrats were using the allegations to reject Sessions over honest ideological differences.
Sessions, from Mobile, later was elected Alabama's attorney general in 1995 before winning his Senate seat in 1996.
"It's a thrill as someone who spent 15 years full-time in federal courts to have this opportunity," he said.
He said any nominee is entitled to a fair hearing but also should expect "probing questions," and he did not rule out a Republican-led filibuster under the right circumstances.
Sessions, whose appointment was to be made official Tuesday, is technically fourth in line in seniority on Judiciary, but the others are either restricted under committee term limits or would have to give up top positions on other panels to take the Judiciary spot.
Under an arrangement worked out to prevent a turf battle, Sessions is expected to keep the Judiciary post only through the end of next year. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa would then take the top GOP post at Judiciary, and Sessions could become lead Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.
"The e-mail Bag"
OK, OK, I admit it:
I have to admit it. My liberal friends were right.
They told me if I voted for McCain, the nation's Hope would deteriorate, and sure enough there has been a 20 point drop in the Consumer Confidence Index since the election, reaching a lower point than any time during the Bush administration.
They told me if I voted for McCain, the US would become more deeply embroiled in the Middle East, and sure enough, tens of thousands of additional troops are scheduled to be deployed into Afghanistan.
They told me if I voted for McCain, that the economy would get worse and sure enough unemployment is approaching 8.8% and the new stimulus packages implemented recently have sent the stock market lower than at any time since the 1980's.
They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more "crooks" in high ranking positions in Federal government and sure enough, several recent cabinet nominees and Senate appointments revealed resumes of bribery and tax fraud.
Well I ignored my Democrat friends in November and voted for McCain. And they were right.... all of their predictions have come true.
Grandma's Birth Control Pills
A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her.
As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized she had a prescription for birth control pills.
"Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills?
"Yes, they help me sleep at night."
"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possibly help you sleep!"
She reached out and patted the young Doctor's knee.
"Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks..................................And believe me, it helps me sleep at night."
