Report: Pelosi Briefed on Interrogation Tactics in 2002

A declassified report submitted to Congress on Wednesday states that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was briefed on the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques,” which include waterboarding, on terrorist suspect Abu Zubaydah in September 2002.

But Pelosi’s office maintains that the content of those briefings did not include details on the use of waterboarding.

The report, prepared by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, was delivered to the Senate Intelligence Committee and other Capitol Hill offices. It cites a Sept. 4, 2002, meeting involving intelligence officials and Pelosi, then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss (R-Fla.) and two aides.

The report describes the meeting as a “Briefing on EITs including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on authorities, and a description of particular EITs that had been employed.” EITs, or enhanced interrogation techniques, are special interrogation tactics that include waterboarding.

Pelosi maintains that she was never told about waterboarding taking place. Last week, she specified that the Bush administration had told her that such tactics might be used, but not that they had already been employed.

And, according to her office, the release of the DNI report says nothing new.

“As this document shows, the Speaker was briefed only once, in September 2002. The briefers described these techniques, said they were legal, but said that waterboarding had not yet been used,” said Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly.

The report also details dozens of other meetings with Members of Congress where the use of waterboarding was described. Lawmakers in those meetings included Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.); Sens. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.); and then-Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.).

The report was sent to Congress with a letter from CIA Director Leon Panetta to Intelligence Committee leaders describing the way it was compiled, ABC News reported Thursday.

The report includes “the most thorough information we have on dates, locations, and names of all Members of Congress who were briefed by the CIA on enhanced interrogation techniques. This information, however, is drawn from the past files of the CIA and represents [memorandums for the record] completed at the time and notes that summarized the best recollections of those individuals,” the letter states.

Democrats are playing an away game right now on Capitol Hill as Republicans try to exploit home field advantage in their favorite sport: national security.

The Guantanamo prison shutdown has completely blown up into the ultimate NIMBY case, with Democrats now joining Republicans in pushing back against release of any detainees to the U.S. mainland. There's intense debate over President Obama's Pentagon spending cuts. The war supplemental bill is now front and center – giving the left heartache over increased spending in Afghanistan.

And the national security story that all the Republicans are loving: Nancy Pelosi was briefed on terrorist interrogations and tactics back in 2002, undermining her claim that she didn't know about any specifics. The GOP was waiting for their 'what did Nancy know and when did she know it' moment, and it has arrived.

WHAT DID PELOSI KNOW: ABC News first broke it last night, and now everybody is following the news that Nancy Pelosi knew more than she has let on about the use of enhanced interrogation/torture. From Siobhan Gorman in today's Wall Street Journal: 'Congressional leaders were briefed in detail about techniques used in the Central Intelligence Agency's interrogation program, according to a new intelligence document. The document appears to conflict with recent statements from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was then the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee. Ms. Pelosi has said she hadn't been told that the CIA was using the technique known as waterboarding, or simulated drowning. According to the document, Ms. Pelosi was one of the first lawmakers briefed on the interrogations in 2002.'

POLITICO's Josh Gerstein says the document 'shows that members of Congress were briefed 40 times since 2002 on aspects of the so-called 'enhanced interrogation' program. Many have decried the techniques used in the program as torture. ... The document describes a September 24, 2002 briefing to Pelosi and then-intelligence chairman Porter Goss (R-Fla.) this way: 'Briefing on EITs including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on authorities, and a description of particular EITs that had been employed.'

At a press conference in Turkey, President Obama asserted that the United States is not a Judeo-Christian nation.

"One of the great strengths of the United States," the President said, "is ... we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation."

Our nation's Founders in 1776 recognized the importance of faith in the founding of our nation when they approved the Declaration of Independence with its four direct religious acknowledgments of God as the Creator ("All people are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"), the Lawgiver ("the laws of nature and nature's God"), the Judge ("appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world"), and the Protector ("with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence") of the new nation.

In fact throughout the American Founding, Congress frequently appropriated money for missionaries and for religious instruction, a practice that Congress repeated for decades after the passage of the Constitution and the First Amendment.

Please stand with our nation's Founders, past Presidents from each political party, and other Americans who believe that the United States is a Judeo-Christian nation by birth.

North Carolina officials have agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Liberty Counsel, challenging the state park policy used to threaten members of Grace Baptist Church for exercising their free speech rights. The day before the preliminary injunction hearing, which was scheduled this week, officials with the state of North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation signed a settlement agreement that also included attorney’s fees and costs. Liberty Counsel represents Pastor Tony Rivers and other church members, who were silenced for sharing the gospel.

Senate Hate Crimes Bill Dangerous to Free Speech

Senator Ted Kennedy introduced a "hate crimes" bill (S. 909) similar to H.R. 1913 (Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009), the bill that passed the House last week. Hate crime bills are designed to give "actual or perceived" sexual preference or "gender identity" (which is classified as a mental disorder) the same legal status as race.

Obviously, this bill is not about the prevention of crime but is all about pushing a radical sexual anarchy. This bill will crush free speech and trample free exercise of religion.”

There are many selfish, dishonest, domineering, minorities here, in Europe, Asia and the Mid-East, that are trying forcefully to gain additional rights (irresponsible freedoms) that God and our Founders didn't give us, and take away our Rights (responsible freedoms) they did give us.

The Star-Spangled Banner, In Spanish?

No apology for sending this. After hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. NOT sorry if this offends anyone because this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along.

I am not against immigration -- just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hawaii passes “Islam Day” law

Hawaii’s state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate “Islam Day” _ over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn’t want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

…The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House.

The bill seeks to recognize “the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions” that Islam and the Islamic world have made.

There is, as far as I know, no “Christianity Day” designation in Hawaiian law, though the state did designate Good Friday a government holiday, which courts ruled was “primarily proposed to increase the frequency of legal holidays.”

No such rationale here.

Ahkmed the Arab came to the United States from the Middle East, and he was only here a few months when he became very ill. He went to doctor after doctor, but none of them could help him.

Finally, he went to an Arabic doctor who said: ‘Take dees bocket, go into de odder room, poop in de bocket, pee on de poop, and den put your head down over de bocket and breathe in de fumes for ten minutes.’

Ahkmed took the bucket, went into the other room, pooped in the bucket, peed on the poop, bent over and breathed in the fumes for ten minutes.

Coming back to the doctor he said, ‘It worked. I feel terrific! What was wrong with me?’
