"Daily Devotions" (KJV and/or NLT)

"The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

One night, I was speaking to several hundred men gathered in a skid row mission. To illustrate the love of God, I pulled a $10 bill from my pocket and said, "The first person who comes to take this from my hand can have it as a free gift."

Not a single person moved. Finally, a middle-aged man, shabbily dressed like the rest, stood timidly to his feet and asked, "Do you really mean it?"

I said, "Sure, come and get it; it is yours."

He almost ran to grasp it, then he thanked me. The rest of the crowd began mumbling, as if to say, "Why didn't I go and accept the gift?"

This gave me a marvelous opportunity to emphasize that we do not earn God's love. God's love is a free gift to all who will accept it by faith. Nothing we do will make God love us any more or any less. He loves us not because of who we are, but because of who He is.

For instance, when Jesus entered Jericho he had to pass under a tree which Zacchaeus, a shunned and despised tax collector, had climbed into in order to see Jesus. He looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." Scrambling out of the tree, he welcomed Jesus into his home.

God's love reaches out to the most socially despised. His love frees a person from sin and despair---no matter who that person is.

"What if America transcended race, and Barack Obama wasn't invited? The question comes to mind as cries of racism grow ever louder from Obama's supporters. No one should be surprised. Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, liberal Democrats have to accuse their opponents of racism." -- columnist Jonah Goldberg

"Barack Obama's escapes from his own past words, deeds and associations have been escapes worthy of Houdini. Like other magicians, Obama has chosen his distractions well. The insurance industry is currently his favorite distraction as scapegoats, after he has tried to demonize doctors without much success. ... Obama even gets away with saying things like having a system to 'keep insurance companies honest' -- and many people may not see the painful irony in politicians trying to keep other people honest." -- economist Thomas Sowell

"[I]t's a mistake to think of the current legislation as a health-care reform bill. It is actually a bill for the formation of a massive health-care bureaucracy charged with the task of scheming endlessly to expand its own power. The only way to prevent this kind of free-floating grant of power to the bureaucracy is to prevent it from forming in the first place, by keeping government out of medicine. ...[W]e don't want a modified or watered down version of this health-care bill. We want no version of this health-care bill and no new health-care bureaucracy." -- columnist Robert Tracinski

Controlling Children's Minds

by Ken Klukowski

http://townhall.com/columnists/KenKlukowski/2009/09/05/controlling_childrens_minds?page=full&comments=true

Most people have now heard that President Obama is going to address America’s school children on September 8. He’ll be speaking to them directly, without their parents there to serve as a filter.

Taken with an outrageous situation unfolding in New Hampshire, where a home-schooling mother has been ordered to put her daughter in public school because the daughter is too outspoken in her Christian beliefs, a terrifying truth emerges: If you can force a child into government schools, you can control that child’s mind.

On Tuesday, around the nation, millions of children will be in a setting where they’re expected to accept what adults tell them, and where they are required to obey.

Many teachers will carry out White House instructions (now officially modified) to give writing topics to their students. The original theme: How can I help President Obama? Children are also encouraged to read books about Obama, and even kindergarteners will be asked, “Why is it important that we listen to the president?”

Meanwhile, a new video is circulating entitled “I Pledge,” wherein popular celebrities lend their voices, saying “I pledge” this and that. While some of those pledges are harmless or even helpful, and others silly, some carry a far-left message.

The most disturbing part is when one speaker says, “I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama.” In case you missed that, toward the end actress Demi Moore adds, “I pledge to be a servant to our president.”

Oh my word.

No citizen in a free country pledges to be a servant of the president. We pledge our allegiance to the flag and to the republic for which it stands, never to the president. He is our servant, not the other way around.

This is the kind of adoration given to dictatorial leaders in totalitarian regimes, unlike in America, where it’s our civic duty to question our leaders and hold them accountable.

And what is the most disturbing fact about this video? It’s being shown in some public schools.

For those who think they can simply keep their children out of government schools, there is an unfolding story that every parent should know. In New Hampshire, a family court judge has ordered a divorced mother, Brenda Voydatch, to place her home-schooled 10-year-old daughter in a public school. The girl’s academics are excellent, but the non-custodial father sought a court order to force her into public school.

Why? Because the court order expresses the judge’s concern that the daughter shares “her mother’s rigidity on questions of faith.” In other words, the girl is a devout, evangelical Christian. The court wrote that she must be exposed to “multiple systems of belief,” and so must attend a secular school.

Where, evidently, she will watch Barack Obama and write papers about how to help the president advance his leftist agenda.

To be fair, it must be noted that the divorced parents agreed to joint decision-making as part of their divorce. This is yet another example of how children all too often pay the price in domestic disputes.

But the court tipped its hand. If this were about meeting a child’s educational needs beyond academics, that might be another discussion. But the court references the girl’s Christian faith, and the mother’s faith, and cites that as a crucial factor in ordering the girl into a secular public school.

The court overstepped its bounds, violating both the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom and the rights of conscience of both the mother and daughter. The Alliance Defense Fund has taken this case to contest the order.

Controlling the learning environment allows you to control a child’s mind. When children are in school at a young and impressionable age, they know that they’re there to learn. They’re told by their parents to listen to the teachers, to do what the teacher says, to trust what they are told. In this environment, children can be taught to believe almost anything. Communist and fascist regimes have taken advantage of this for decades, indoctrinating children to become obedient servants to the government, to adore the head of state and to fanatically follow that leader.

This New Hampshire situation is frightening, especially in the context of public schools being told to channel in Barack Obama.

Parents dub Sept. 8 'Keep Your Kids at Home Day'

Why should parents be concerned as President Obama prepares to address, via satellite, the children in the public schoolrooms of America? Parents must and should evaluate each and every word and/or point in Obama’s speech. President Obama has appointed and surrounded himself with the most left-wing radicals in US History.

With President Obama’s words being more closely examined on a daily basis, each of you can “betcha” his own words as written have been softened today, slightly differently from a few days ago. You can also anticipate the “mean-stream” media, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, etc., will not be looking out for (y)our children. - oyh

Widespread movement to opt-out of Obama's televised speech to children

By Chelsea Schilling

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=108795

Following widespread concern about President Obama's nationally televised address to schoolchildren, many parents and schools are opting to forgo the Sept. 8 speech.

School officials have been asked to take a break from normal educational activities to allow students to view the speech from the president and participate in recommended brainstorming exercises following the broadcast. Obama will give the speech at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va. The speech is scheduled to broadcast live at 12 noon EST on C-SPAN and at whitehouse.gov.

But parents across the nation are complaining about the speech taking up valuable classroom instruction time and possibly "indoctrinating" young children.

According to a letter from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, "The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. …

"He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens."

Some schools allow parents to opt-out

Donald Phillips, superintendent of California's Poway Unified School District, sent a letter to parents Wednesday announcing that the district "will not be encouraging" teachers to include the viewing of the president's speech as a part of a supplemental classroom learning activity. If teachers choose to do so, they must inform parents by Friday and give them an opportunity to opt-out of the Tuesday broadcast.

"Who Killed the Constitution?" Here's a dirty little secret: The bedrock of our country is ... dead http://shop.wnd.com/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=2380

Students who opt-out will be assigned alternate learning activities outside of the classroom during the speech and any follow-up discussions.

Additionally, the district is providing a link to a copy of the president's speech so parents may decide whether they want to view it at home with their children.

"We believe the president's address would be the most beneficial if you choose to view it together at home as a family," the memo states. "We believe any discussion with your child or children around the importance of education and goal-setting could be both meaningful and appropriate."

Officials with Texas' Keller Independent School District said they will allow students to view the presidential address. However, a district notice states, "If parents do not want their student(s) to watch the broadcast, parents may dismiss their student(s) during that time and not be penalized." Additionally, the children will not be required to use the United States Education Department materials for suggested brainstorming assignments after the speech. Many Texas school districts are asking parents to contact principals if they do not wish for their children to view the speech while several schools have opted not to show the broadcast.

Stephanie Klick, Tarrant County Republican Party chairwoman, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that many Texas families are speaking out against plans to air the broadcast in schools.

"We're hearing from parents and grandparents that are not very happy. They really feel like it is political indoctrination," Klick said. "People don't like this. I have heard from some families that are planning to keep their kids home."

The Houston Independent School District has directed principals to give parents advance notice if they are planning lessons around Obama's speech. Parents may opt-out their children. According to a Houston Chronicle report, "Children pulled out of school for the day will cost districts about $35 per child, as state funding for schools is based on daily attendance."

In Utah, school districts are taking precautions ahead of the speech, according to KSL 5 News. Salt Lake City School District is advising schools to have teachers notify parents if they plan on airing the address in class, and then allowing an opt-out. Some principals will be sending home notices if their schools plan to show the speech.

One Utah father told the Deseret News he will pull his four children out of school rather than allow them to watch the Obama broadcast.

"We will go on a picnic and read the Constitution – learn something useful," he said.

Wisconsin school districts have been hearing from concerned parents, according to the Associated Press http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-wi-obama-educationsp,0,4670543.story. Palm Beach County, Fla., public schools may not run the broadcast http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/local_news/epaper/2009/09/03/0903obama.html. In Columbia, Mo., a district spokeswoman said kids won't be seeing the speech at all.

Meanwhile, Atlas Shrugs' http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/ Pamela Gellar blasted the White House and the Department of Education for spelling errors in its "Indoctrination Day" announcement, noting that she will keep her children home from school on Sept. 8.

Geller took this screenshot of the announcement:

Geller's screenshot shows misspelling of "schoolchildren."

"Yes, your education tax dollars at work," Geller wrote. "Math, geography, spelling, English – that's for fascists! What's important is junk science, global hoaxes, and the green-colored slave labor market. Live for the sake of 'the man' and like it."

She continued, "Obama, stay away from my children. ... My kids will not be in school on the 8th (and neither should yours)."

Objections to president's speech

Several bloggers discussed their thoughts on the president's address to schoolchildren on the Free Republic website. The following are some comments about the upcoming speech:

I'm so mad right now, I think my head will explode.

You don't mess with people's kids! There's a line, and he'd better no cross it or he will cause a revolution in this country.

This idea reeks of Bill Ayers.

He is treading on very dangerous ground.

Thank God we live in Alaska. That's 8 a.m. up here, and most of the students are still eating breakfast. I'll read the transcript later in case I want to experience nausea.

Why does this have to be a live broadcast? Why must all schools halt at the appointed time to listen to our dear leader? It doesn't accommodate children or the families very well.

Isn't it time for parents to organize a national campaign to pull their kids out of school on that day?

Have you called your local school today to express your opinion about the Obama propaganda video and lesson plan? If not, now is a good time. Even if you do not have children in school, you pay taxes to support it and you have to live with the results of its teachings, so you have a stake in the outcome.

I would keep my kid out for the whole day instead of just a couple of hours – the school districts receive an amount per student based on their daily attendance, so the thing to do is to hit them in the pocketbook, where it hurts.

I will be keeping both of my children out the entire day. Our school district has said they will be airing the speech and also have other activities planned around it. Knowing what some of these school boards and administrators are like, those activities could be more damaging than an Obama speech.

I assume brownshirts will be taking the names of those who opt out.
Several people referred to Sept. 8 as "National Keep Your Kids at Home Day."

The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition announced its "Hall Pass on That" website, with several suggested actions for parents who do not approve of their children participating in the presentation. The coalition offers the following suggestions:

Contact the child's school to find out whether it is participating in the program.
If your child's school is participating, ask what alternatives there are for the children of families who wish for their students to learn about the establishment of the country respective to the Founding Fathers' intentions. Discussions may focus on the Constitution, the definition and actions of a republic and the responsibility of elected leaders to their constituents.

Ask if the school can excuse your child from the presentation and instead receive a DVD of the address and copy of the activity directives to be evaluated by parents at a later date.

Request a meeting with the school board, superintendent and principal to inquire as to why parents were excluded from the decision-making process of this event.
Pre- and post-speech lesson plans

The Education Department has been encouraging teachers to create lesson plans around the speech, using materials provided on the department website.

As WND reported, worksheets provided by the U.S. Department of Education encouraged teachers to ask pre-K through 6th-grade students the following questions:

What is the president trying to tell me to do?

What is the president asking me to do?

What new ideas and actions is the president challenging me to think about?

Students may be asked to write down "key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful, make posters of their goals, create a "supportive community" by sharing those goals with one another.

Junior-high and high-school students may be asked to brainstorm answers to the following questions before the speech:

Why does President Obama want to speak with us today?

How will he inspire us?

How will he challenge us?

What might he say?

They are encouraged to take notes while Obama speaks about personal responsibility, goals or persistence. As part of a "guided discussion," they may talk about what Obama has inspired or challenged them to do.

Fox News reported that the White House is now "rethinking" its course recommendations for students and rewriting its suggestions for student assignments on how to "help the president."

Among the activities suggested for pre-K to 6th grade students were to "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president" and discuss what "the president wants us to do."

According to the report, the suggestion about writing letters has been changed to: "Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

Lessons prompt concerns about 'illegal activity'

The Texas Justice Foundation warned the proposed '"classroom activities'" for teachers as to how they should handle the president's Sept. 8th speech to American schoolchildren, reveal that illegal activity may occur, if the recommendations are followed."

"The questions, comments, evaluations and analysis that occurs before, during, and after the president's speech will clearly 'reveal information concerning political affiliations' and probably, 'critical appraisals of other individuals with whom the child(ren) has/have close family relationships' (such as parents)," the foundation said in a press release. "This is perhaps one of the greatest invasions of personal privacy and injecting political affiliation into the public school system in the history of the United States."

The group said the speech may violate protections provided in the Pupil Rights Amendment.

"It also violates 34 Code of Federal Regulations Section 98.4[c] [1] and [2] that defines psychological testing as:
(1) Psychiatric or psychological examination or test means a method of obtaining information, including a group activity, that is not directly related to academic instruction and that is designed to elicit information about attitudes, habits, traits, opinions, beliefs or feelings; (emphasis added)

(2) Psychiatric or psychological treatment means an activity involving the planned, systematic use of methods or techniques that are not directly related to academic instruction and that is designed to affect behavioral, emotional, or attitudinal characteristics of an individual or group. (emphasis added)

Texas Justice Foundation warned that the group activities suggested by the Department of Education "are not directly related to academic instruction and that are designed to elicit information about attitudes, habits, traits, opinions, beliefs, or feelings."

"At this time of intense controversy over the president's far-reaching plans to transform America, it is incredible that he would consider using children to advance his political agenda," Justice Foundation President Allan Parker said. "It violates the constitutional right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children, federal law and is perhaps the greatest intrusion of a president into the education process in the history of the United States. In the opinion of the Texas Justice Foundation lawyers, it is both morally and legally wrong."

'Public relations tactic gone too far'

Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Center for Educational Freedom, objected to the Obama administration message to schoolchildren in a Cato Institute article titled, "Hey Obama, leave those kids alone."

"It's one thing for a president to encourage all kids to work hard and stay in school – that's a reasonable use of the bully pulpit," McCluskey wrote. "It's another thing entirely, however, to have the U.S. Department of Education send detailed instructions to public schools nationwide on how to glorify the president and the presidency, and push them to drive social change. Frighteningly, this is what President Obama has done."

McCluskey objected to Department of Education-suggested classroom activities for pre-K-6 students encouraging children to make posters setting out "community and country" goals.

"Perhaps even more frightening is the lesson schools are pushed to teach that it is important to listen to 'the president and other elected officials,'" he wrote. "Possibly most distressing of all, though, is guidance that appears explicitly designed to glorify both the presidency and President Obama himself …"

He said the White House is trying to use its power over education to "indoctrinate children, something completely antithetical to a free society."

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder condemned Obama's speech as a "public relations tactic" that has gone too far.

"I believe that if parents choose to keep their children at home during this presentation, they should be able to do so without any consequences being imposed upon their children," Kinder said. "And if local school districts across Missouri choose not to make this speech mandatory for students, they should not face any penalties for the state or federal government."

Jim Greer, chairman of the Florida Republican Party, said in a statement that he believes Obama's speech may be a platform "to spread" his "socialist ideology."

"As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the president justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other president, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power."

He continued, "While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American president and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda. The address scheduled for Sept. 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the president's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our president's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates."

Without Tort Reform, It Isn't Health Care Reform --It's a Plaintiffs' Lawyers Protection Act

by Hugh Hewitt

http://townhall.com/columnists/HughHewitt/2009/09/04/without_tort_reform,_it_isnt_health_care_reform_--its_a_plaintiffs_lawyers_protection_act?page=full&comments=true

President Obama wants everyone to believe that American health care is in a crisis, and he wants everyone to be willing to sacrifice in order to solve that crisis.

He wants senior citizens to pay more for Medicare but get fewer benefits. He wants them to ignore the rationing embedded in his proposals to cut hundreds of billions from the Medicare budget and to drastically increase the cost of Medicare Advantage.

President Obama wants seniors to sacrifice.

President Obama wants employers to pay more in health care premiums, and if they don't provide health insurance for their employees, he wants them to pay penalty taxes. He doesn't care that tens of thousands of small businesses are struggling to stay open and keep their employees employed. And he doesn't care that the expiration of the Bush tax cuts will hit these businesses hard.

President Obama wants employers to sacrifice.

President Obama wants doctors and hospitals to sacrifice. He is demanding cuts in reimbursement rates to hundreds of thousands of doctors and deep cuts for hospitals as well. He doesn't care that doctors' incomes have been pressured by falling reimbursement rates for years, and that many hospitals are struggling with the emergency room costs of treating the uninsured.

President Obama wants doctors and hospitals to sacrifice.

President Obama wants Big Pharma and insurance companies to sacrifice. President Obama wants young healthy people who choose not to buy health insurance to sacrifice.

President Obama wants everyone to sacrifice. Well, not quite everyone.

There is one group that President Obama doesn't mention, one group he doesn't demand sacrifice for the greater good.

President Obama is protecting the plaintiffs' lawyers who sue doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies and reap billions in fees from the tort lottery.

Though the broken, out-of-control tort system drives the cost of medicine through the roof, President Obama hasn't demanded any changes to that system, like a cap on pain and suffering damages, or a cap on lawyers' fees, or an excise tax on plaintiffs' contingency awards.

President Obama hasn't even asked for a provision that would award wrongfully sued doctors and hospitals the cost of their defense.

President Obama hasn't asked anything of the plaintiffs' lawyers because those plaintiff lawyers contribute tens of millions of dollars to Democratic candidates. They have done so for years and they will continue to do so as long as the Democrats protect their business. They put a lot of money into the Obama campaign and the Democratic drive to take over Congress, and their investment is paying off handsomely.

The president and Congressional Democrats have been protecting the plaintiffs' lawyers' business all year long, even though their business is a chief driver of skyrocketing health care costs.

Next week's speech by President Obama to the Congress will be full of the increasingly tiresome rhetoric of crisis and sacrifice.

But it won't be talking about the plaintiffs' lawyers and the costs they impose on us all.

And it certainly won't be demanding serious reform of the tort system as part of the "reform" of health care.

And therein is all you need to know about the merits of Obamacare. The president doesn't believe American health care is in a crisis, because if he did, he'd call for the tort reform that every expert believes is necessary.

But he won't. So we all know it is a giant exercise in hypocritical politics of the worst sort.

Obamacare deserves to die for a lot of reasons, but large among them is the sheer duplicity of demanding deep sacrifices of everyone except the plaintiffs' lawyers who have grown rich beyond most people's imaginations profiting off of the doctors and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies that work to keep Americans healthy.

Keep this in mind when you watch the president next week, if you even bother to watch.

Normalizing transgenderism in schools

Pete Chagnon - OneNewsNow

http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/Default.aspx?id=661996

A New England-based pro-family organization is concerned about a situation in Vermont involving bathroom arrangements at schools.

Brian Camenker of MassResistance says the homosexual movement in Vermont is using a transgender-rights law to force middle schools and high schools to provide unisex bathrooms. He notes that a 16-year-old transgendered teen has asked the Vermont Human Rights Commission to lend its support to the effort.

According to an Associated Press report, the student claims that she and others like her need the unisex bathrooms in order to avoid bullying and ridicule. A homosexual activist with Outright Vermont is quoted in the story as saying their "hope is that this is the first statewide gender-neutral bathroom campaign in the country."

Camenker is concerned that a similar effort could take place in Massachusetts should that state's transgender rights and hate crimes bill [H1728] pass.

"Well, it's a huge problem," he explains. "Number one...it legitimizes the concept of transgenderism among middle-school kids, which is completely absurd and offensive and medically dangerous. The medical community recognizes gender-identity disorder as something that needs psychological help, you know -- not this politically correct pandering that actually causes more self-destruction."

Indeed, individual and family counseling -- focused on treating depression and anxiety and on improving self-esteem -- usually is recommended to treat children with gender-identity disorder.

Camenker also argues that activists will use the unisex bathroom argument to get their foot in the door and then that will lead to more transgender indoctrination and diversity training within America's middle and high schools.

Obama Penalizes Democratic Government In Favor Wannabe Dictator

By Texan2driver's Blog

A Latin-American country with a reasonably stable, democratic government and a constitution that is ACTUALLY FOLLOWED seems to be something Comrade Obama just can’t stand for. This clown Zelaya tried an end run around the Honduran constitution to do away with term limits and install himself as the next Hugo Chavez style dictator. The government followed the Honduran law and constitution to detain and oust Zelaya and preserve their democratic government.

Well, Obama will have none of that. It’s either they bring back the guy who wants to destroy their government, or we (being Obama the communist lover) will destroy it for you. It’s not enough that he is destroying America and our representative republic to turn it into a communist state, he has to make every effort to destroy any other democratic government that he can possibly influence.

Our rectal comedian (a.k.a. a$$ clown) of a “president” wants to withhold millions of dollars of aid from a country that actually likes us. Here’s an idea for you, butt brain. How about cutting off the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in aid we keep giving to all of these countries that hate us and do everything they can to thwart American interests around the world? The many muslim countries that hate our guts, want us dead, and harbor/support terrorism should be first on the list. Next you have the other spineless ingrates that always seem to vote against us in the UN. You want to fund health care? Cut off those dead beats and you’ll be off to a good start.

U.S. May Not Recognize Results of Honduran Vote

By Mary Beth Sheridan
Washington Post Staff Writer

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/03/AR2009090302624_pf.html

The U.S. government on Thursday toughened its stance against Honduras’s coup leaders and supporters, threatening to put them “in a box” by not recognizing the winner of a presidential election set for November.

The de facto government had hoped that the election would provide an end to the crisis that has gripped the Central American country since the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya on June 28. The balloting had been scheduled well before Zelaya was detained and whisked out of the country by the military.

But U.S. officials said for the first time that they would continue to shun the country unless Honduran leaders went back to a negotiated plan that would allow the return of Zelaya with limited powers until the expiration of his term in December.

“Based on conditions as they currently exist, we cannot recognize the results of this election. So for the de facto regime, they’re now in a box,” said State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley. “And they will have to sign on to the San Jose accords to get out of the box.” He was referring to the plan for Zelaya’s return, which was negotiated in the Costa Rican capital.

The announcement amounted to a gamble that the threat would finally force the de facto government to back down. So far, that government, led by longtime congressman Roberto Micheletti, has resisted intense international economic and political pressure. Its members argue that Zelaya’s removal was legal because he had violated the constitution by organizing a referendum that could have allowed him to evade the one-term presidential limit.

But the reasons for the coup supporters’ vehemence go deeper: They fear that the leftist Zelaya wanted to introduce the socialist-style agenda promoted by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, a Zelaya ally and leader of an anti-American bloc in the hemisphere.

“This is a tough call, because I think there are no white hats in this story,” said Ted Piccone, a specialist in U.S.-Latin American relations at the Brookings Institution. “But there is a clear bright line around the militarily forced exile of a democratically elected president, and so that has to be addressed.”

However, he and other analysts said, if the interim government does not change its stance, the decision not to recognize the election could only deepen the crisis.

The State Department’s action “limits our options, a violation of the first law of diplomacy, by taking off the table the one means by which the crisis could naturally be resolved,” said Eric Farnsworth, a Latin America expert at the Council of the Americas, a U.S.-based business group.

The announcement came as the State Department also formally terminated about $30 million in aid to the Honduran government that had been suspended. Authorities also said they were examining revoking more visas of Hondurans who participated in, or supported, the coup.

The announcement triggered new opposition from Republicans in Congress who have denounced the Obama administration’s policy on Honduras and held up some diplomatic appointments in protest.

“The U.S. approach to friends and foes is completely backwards. While appeasing the enemies of freedom worldwide, we punish those in Honduras struggling to preserve the rule of law, fundamental liberties, and democratic values,” Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said in a statement.

The U.S. moves were applauded by Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, who has encouraged a negotiated settlement. “The coup regime has engaged in undemocratic practices that cast a dark shadow over elections scheduled for November. Those elections will lack legitimacy unless the regime embraces and faithfully implements the San Jose Accord,” he said in a statement.

Major Latin American countries have said they would not recognize the results of the November election unless the coup is reversed.

Hello All,

By now you have probably heard that President Obama came to Montana last Friday. However, there are many things that the major news has not covered. I feel that since Bill and I live here and we were at the airport on Friday I should share some facts with you. Whatever you decide to do with the information is up to you. If you chose to share this email with others I do ask that you DELETE my email address before you forward this on.

On Wednesday, August 5th it was announced locally that the President would be coming here. There are many groups here that are against his healthcare and huge spending so those groups began talking and deciding on what they were going to do. The White House would not release ANY details other than the date.

On about Tuesday Bill found out that they would be holding the "Town Hall" at the airport. (This is only because Bill knows EVERYONE at the airport) Our airport is actually located outside of Belgrade (tiny town) in a very remote location. Nothing is around there. They chose to use a hangar that is the most remotely located hangar. You could not pick a more remote location, and you can not get to it easily.

It is totally secluded from the public.

FYI: We have many areas in Belgrade and Bozeman which could have held a large amount of folks with sufficient parking. (gymnasiums/auditoriums). All of which have chairs and tables, and would not have to be SHIPPED IN!! $$$$$
During the week, cargo by the TONS was being shipped in constantly. Airport employees could not believe how it just kept coming. Though it was our President coming several expressed how excessive it was, especially during a recession. $$$$$

Late Tuesday/early Wednesday the 12th, they said that tickets would be handed out on Thursday 9am at two locations and the president would be arriving around 12:30 Friday.

Thursday morning about 600 tickets were passed out. However, 1500 were printed at a Local printing shop per White House request.. Hmmmm......900 tickets just DISAPPEARED.

This same morning someone called into the radio from the local UPS branch and said that THOUSANDS of Dollars of Lobster were shipped in for Obama. Montana has some of the best beef in the nation!!! And it would have been really wonderful to help out the local economy. Anyone heard of the Recession?? Just think...with all of the traveling the White House is doing. $$$$$ One can only imagine what else we are paying for.

On Friday Bill and I got out to the airport about 10:45am. The groups that wanted to protest Obama's spending and healthcare had gotten a permit to protest and that area was roped off. But that was not to be. A large bus carrying SEIU (Service Employees International Union) members drove up onto the area (illegal)and unloaded right there. It was quite a commotion and there were specifically 2 SEIU men trying to make trouble and start a fight. Police did get involved and arrested the one man but they said they did not have the manpower to remove the SEIU crowd.
The SEIU crowd was very organized and young. About 99% were under the age of 30 and they were not locals! They had bullhorns and PROFESSIONALLY made signs. Some even wore preprinted T-shirts. Oh, and Planned Parenthood folks were with them.....professing abortion rights with their T-shirts and preprinted signs.. (BTW, all these folks did have a permit to protest in ANOTHER area)

Those against healthcare/spending moved away from the SEIU crowd to avoid confrontation. They were orderly and respectful. Even though SEIU kept coming over and walking through, continuing to be very intimidating and aggressive at the direction of the one SEIU man.

So we had Montana folks from ALL OVER the state with their homemade signs and their DOGS with homemade signs. We had cowboys, nurses, doctors you name it. There was even a guy from Texas who had been driving through. He found out about the occasion, went to the store, made a sign, and came to protest.

If you are wondering about the press.....Well, all of the major networks were over by that remote hangar I mentioned. They were conveniently parked on the other side of the buildings FAR away. None of these crowds were even visible to them. I have my doubts that they knew anything about the crowds.
We did have some local news media around us from this state and Idaho . Speaking of the local media...they were invited. However, all questions were to be turned into the White House in advance of the event. Wouldn't want anyone to have to think off the top of their head.

It was very obvious that it was meant to be totally controlled by the White House. Everything was orchestrated down to the last detail to make it appear that Montana is just crazy for Obama and government healthcare. Even those people that talked about their insurance woes.........the White House called our local HRDC (Human Resource and Development Committee) and asked for names. Then the White House asked those folks to come. Smoke and mirrors...EVERYTHING was staged!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very dismayed about what I learned about our current White House. The amount of control and manipulation was unbelievable. I felt I was not living in the United States of America , more like the USSR !! I was physically nauseous. Bill and I have been around when Presidents or Heads of State visit. It has NEVER been like this. I am truly very frightened for our country. America needs your prayers and your voices. If you care about our country please get involved. Know the issues. And let Congress hear your voices again and again!! If they are willing to put forth so much effort to BULLY a small town one can only imagine what is going on in Washington DC . Scary!!
