Court of Appeals Weighs Gideon Bible Controversy Today
www.LC.org
Today, a three-member panel of the federal court of appeals in St. Louis, Missouri, is hearing a case involving the distribution of Gideon Bibles to school children.
Mat Staver is presenting oral argument in the case of Roark v. South Iron R-1 School District, on behalf of the District and its equal access policy, which allows outside groups to offer secular or religious materials, including Bibles, to students from a table at school.
After the ACLU sued the District, a lower federal court judge ruled the District's policy unconstitutional because it could be used to allow students access to the Bible, which she derisively called "an instrument of religion."
Please pray that this judge's outrageous ruling is reversed by the appeals court. The Bible should not be treated as contraband in our public schools.
Read our News Release for more details about this case.
Audio of the oral argument will be made available on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals website at http://www.ca8.uscourts.gov/oralargs/oaFrame.html. Click on "Attorney Who Argued" link on the left side of the frame and enter Mathew Staver's name in the boxes on the next page.

THE MORNING BELL
THURSDAY, DEC. 11, 2008 Bankruptcy Is Best Way to Save Auto Industry
Last night while marshaling votes for the House's eventual 237-to-170 vote in favor of nationalizing Detroit, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) told the Wall Street Journal: "If we do nothing we face the risk that sometime soon there will be no American auto industry .." Hoyer has it exactly backward. A government takeover of the Big Three represents the biggest threat to their long-term existence, while a Chapter 11 restructuring is the best way to ensure the long-term viability of the industry.
Bankruptcy Does Not Mean Death : The auto nationalization cheerleaders keep claiming bankruptcy proceedings for the Big Three automakers would cause a loss of 3.3 million jobs. This is a completely fictional number that assumes all three automakers would go bankrupt simultaneously and that all three companies would then immediately cease all operations entirely. Both assumptions are completely false. Ford has said repeatedly that it is in better financial shape and does not need taxpayer money. Furthermore, under Chapter 11 any firm that did declare bankruptcy would still be able to operate under the protection of a bankruptcy court. Even if GM filed for Chapter 7 liquidation, their assets would not simply cease to exist. More likely, entire plants and brands would be sold to other competitors who would then continue to operate them. Either way, the industry's fear-mongering scenario of a 100% contraction of the auto industry would never happen.
Bankruptcy Is Designed to Resolve Complex Problems : GM and Chrysler are not suffering from a short-term liquidity problem. They are suffering from a long-term structural problem that includes uncompetitive labor costs, a bloated dealership network and a short-term credit crisis. All three of these issues are best addressed through bankruptcy. The Bankruptcy Code has a well-developed and tested body of law to help bankruptcy judges modify existing labor contracts. A bankruptcy judge has significant discretion and power to push the parties toward an agreement that is mutually acceptable, conforms to economic realities and ensures the business is able to return to profitability. Bankruptcy laws also allow firms to reconsider contractual obligations free of state franchise laws, solving the dealership problem. And bankruptcy allows for an automatic stay on all creditor claims, giving GM and Chrysler the time they need to become competitive again.
Bankruptcy Pulls Politics Out of the Process: In exchange for a $15 billion down payment and the promise of more bailout money in a few months, the auto companies must agree to report to a "car czar" and have their long-term business plans approved by Congress. Do we really trust people like Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) and Charlie Rangel (D-NY) to put the economic viability of the auto companies ahead of their own short-term political interests? Is there any evidence at all that politicians would even know what would be in the best economic interest of the auto companies?
Making the case for bankruptcy instead of bailout last night, Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) told the Washington Post: "Chapter 11 doesn't mean death and destruction. It means restructuring and rebirth."

Chicago Schools Administrator: Homosexual High School Is 'Necessary'
Thursday, December 11, 2008
By Matt Hadro
Chicago Public Schools
Washington (CNSNews.com) – A proposed homosexual-friendly Chicago public high school is “necessary” for the well-being of students, a Chicago Public Schools administrator told CNSNews.com Wednesday.
Joyce Brown, who is in charge of the public school district’s high school counselors, said the “Social Justice High School – Pride Campus” is necessary because “the issue (of homosexuality) is out there.”
“Whatever is bubbling up,” she said, “needs to be addressed because the issue is there.”
The proposed school would offer taxpayer-funded support for homosexual and lesbian students. The school proposal was to be voted on by the Chicago Board of Education on Nov. 19, but the plan was pulled at the last minute.
If approved, the school's mission would parallel that of the other Social Justice High School: “Project based and problem based learning that addresses real world issues through the lenses of race, gender, culture, economic equity, peace, justice, and the environment will be the catalyst for developing our curriculum.”
When asked how the introduction of social justice high schools improves the performance of the Chicago district, Brown was vague.
“Schools need to be connected with the students they teach,” she said.
Brown, who was in Washington to take part in a news conference on college admissions testing, said she did not want the homosexual school’s creation to reflect “that our system has failed and we have to have pullouts.”
That means, she said, that the proposed high school is not being created to address any purported “bullying” or “intolerance” of homosexual and lesbian students in Chicago public schools.
Brown said efforts to decrease bullying are in place in all public schools.
Social Justice High School – Pride Campus is important, she said, because students need “to feel comfortable.”
“It’s important that we address the needs of that particular segment and say ‘What’s not working for you in our system that we can work on’?”
She added: "That is what matters -- coming to a school where you feel valued, where people are going to push you to the next level of success, and they are there to help you and show that they care.”
Brown expects that the plan will re-surface again for consideration in the future.
“It’s not off the table,” she said.

House Report Sends Wrong Signal on FCC
Without so much as a hearing, House Democrats issued a blanket condemnation of a leader in the fight against indecency, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin. The report, issued today a year after the Energy and Commerce Committee's probe began, lost the support of GOP members after Democrats could produce no evidence of wrongdoing. Yet one month away from a potential leadership change, liberals claim the agency is "dysfunctional" and spend 110 pages trying to paint Martin as a power-hungry monster who creates a "climate of fear" at the FCC. Even a senior Democratic staffer told the Washington Post that "aside from bad manners" the report did not show that Martin violated a single law.
To those of us who have worked closely with this Chairman, the allegations are much ado about nothing. When liberals came up empty-handed on their fishing expedition, they obviously decided to get personal. The reality is that this chairman has distinguished himself from others for his interest in protecting families and the innocence of children. Martin has actively fought broadcast indecency and has never been afraid to push for stiff, lawful penalties on the big networks. He has been a champion of consumers, which is probably best illustrated by his pursuit of an a la carte cable system. Like FRC, he believes that companies shouldn't force Americans to pay for programs that they find offensive.
Although the report is bound to get plenty of play in the press, my experience with Martin has been positive. In his tenure, he has been sympathetic to the concerns of social conservatives. Our nation's communications laws speak time and again of the public interest. Chairman Martin has served that interest well.

The shoebox - Absolutely priceless
A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.
For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.
He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she said, ' my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.' The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness. 'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?'
'Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling the dolls.'
A Prayer.......
Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man;
Love to forgive him;
And Patience for his moods;
Because Lord, if I pray for Strength,
I'll beat him to death, because I don't know how to crochet.
Nicest redneck email that I have read!!!
We have enjoyed the redneck jokes for years. It's time to take a reflective look at the core beliefs of a culture that values home, family, country and God.. If I had to stand before a dozen terrorists who threaten my life, I'd choose a half dozen or so rednecks to back me up. Tire irons, squirrel guns and grit -- that's what rednecks are made of. I hope I am one of those. If you feel the same, pass this on to your redneck friends. Ya'll know who ya' are.
You might be a redneck if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, 'One nation, under God.'
You might be a redneck if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.
You might be a redneck if: You still say ' Christmas' instead of 'Winter Festival.'
You might be a redneck if: You bow your head when someone prays.
You might be a redneck if: You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem.
You might be a redneck if: You treat our armed forces veterans with great respect, and always have.
You might be a redneck if: You've never burned an American flag, nor intend to..
You might be a redneck if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.
You might be a redneck if: You respect your elders and raised your kids to do the same.
You might be a redneck if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend.
If you got this email from me, it is because I believe that you, like me, have just enough Red Neck in you to have the same beliefs as those talked about in this email..
