Stupid is as stupid does

After the most recent presidential election, when, as you may recall, our once great nation exposed its collective flank -- unmitigated ignorance -- to the world, a reputable pollster, John Zogby, endeavored to determine how 66 million of us could be so profoundly stupid.

We reported his findings in our "Non Compos Mentis" section two weeks ago, including, for example, that 56.1 percent of Obama supporters did not know his political career was launched by two former terrorists from the Weather Underground; that 57 percent did not know which political party controlled congress; that 72 percent did not know Joe Biden withdrew from a previous presidential campaign because of plagiarism in law school; and that 87 percent thought Sarah Palin said she could "see Russia from my house," even though that was "Saturday Night Live" comedian Tina Fey in a parody of Palin.

The Zogby polling was designed to determine how much influence the media had on shaping public opinion, and, thus, the outcome of the election. Of course, establishing that the political landscape would look very different if the media were neutral is filed under "keen sense of the obvious."

However, a report issued last week by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute is more relevant to understanding why Barack Obama received so much support from those between 18 and 30 years of age -- support that put him over the top.

For the last two years, ISI has assessed the civil literacy of young people at American colleges and universities, testing both students and faculty. The civics test included a cross section of multiple-choice questions about our system of government, history and free enterprise -- questions to assess the knowledge that all Americans should possess in order to understand their civic responsibility and make informed decisions in matters such as elections.

More than 14,000 freshmen and seniors at 50 schools nationwide were given the 60-question exam. More than 50 percent of freshmen and 54 percent of seniors failed the test. (So they get dumber?)

This year, ISI went beyond the "institutions of higher learning" to assess civic literacy across demographic groups. The 2008 civics quiz asked similar questions to those asked to college and university students in previous years, but also included questions about civic participation and policy issues. The results were then subjected to multivariate regression analysis in order to determine if college and university graduates had a higher civic IQ than the rest of society.

As you might expect, 71 percent of Americans failed the test, with an average score of 49. Educators did not fare much better, scoring an average of 55 percent. As the researchers noted, "Fewer than half of all Americans can name all three branches of government, a minimal requirement for understanding America's constitutional system."

College grads flunked, answering 57 percent of the questions correctly, compared to 44 percent for high school grads.

Less than 24 percent of those with college degrees knew that the First Amendment prohibits establishing an official religion for the United States. Further, only 54 percent can correctly identify the basic tenets of the free enterprise system.

Would you be shocked to know that elected officials have a lower civic IQ than the public they ostensibly serve? Indeed, these paragons of representative government answered just 44 percent of the questions correctly. Almost a third of elected officials could not identify "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as the inalienable rights in our Declaration of Independence.

Our Founders, those venerable Patriots who signed our Declaration of Independence and codified the liberty that is declared in our Constitution, understood that liberty could not long survive an epidemic of ignorance.

According to George Washington: "The best means of forming a manly, virtuous, and happy people will be found in the right education of youth. Without this foundation, every other means, in my opinion, must fail."

John Adams wrote: "Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right, from the frame of their nature, to knowledge, as their great Creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge; I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers. ... Wisdom and knowledge, as well as virtue, diffused generally among the body of the people, being necessary for the preservation of their rights and liberties..."

Thomas Jefferson insisted: "Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day. ... If a nation expects to be ignorant -- and free -- in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."

James Madison agreed: "A people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. ... What spectacle can be more edifying or more seasonable, than that of Liberty and Learning, each leaning on the other for their mutual & surest support?"

Today, however, it would seem that ignorance is not only blissful but virtuous.

Rogers: Bankruptcy Good for GM

Investment guru Jim Rogers has opposed every government bailout since the financial crisis began over a year ago.

So it’s no surprise that he thinks General Motors should be allowed to enter bankruptcy.

“It would be good for GM to fail,” he told Bloomberg TV.

“They could renegotiate a lot of bad contracts and clean up a lot of bad mistakes.”

There is no reason to liquidate any of the Big Three automakers, Rogers says.

“Let it be a regular bankruptcy and let the courts and creditors sort it out,” he says. “This is the way the system is supposed to work.”

The idea is that “when people get in trouble, the competent take over the assets of the incompetent,” Rogers explains.

“What’s happening now is that the government is taking assets away from the competent, giving them to the incompetent and saying, ‘Now, compete with the competent.’ ”

The result: “It’s bad economics and bad morality. It never works.”

Rogers blasted the government’s handling of the financial crisis. “It has spent $8 trillion to $10 trillion trying to prop everyone up,” he says.

“That will lead to the demise of the dollar, much higher interest rates, and much higher inflation. It will be disastrous for America.”

Others are coming to agree with Rogers. "There's bailout fatigue right now," Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) told the Los Angeles Times.

“People are tired of 'Give us the money and we'll see what we need to do with it.'”

It looks like the foreigners with a stake in Citigroup preferred a U.S. taxpayer bailout. They got what they wanted.

There has been a fierce national debate over whether American car companies in Detroit deserve $25 billion of taxpayer money and whether American jobs should be saved. GM, Ford and Chrysler are American companies in competition with foreigners, who have their own auto production plants on U.S. soil. The U.S. automakers and a union representative were ridiculed, didn’t get the money, and were told to come up with a “plan” to save the companies so they would be more competitive with the foreigners.

But Citigroup got $20 billion from the Treasury Department over the weekend of November 22/23—just before Thanksgiving—without any national debate or discussion at all. The Federal Reserve simply issued a press release announcing that the taxpayers were on the hook not only for the $20 billion but $306 billion in loans to the company. That’s on top of a previous $25 billion invested in the company by the Treasury Department.

Auto company executives may have flown to Washington, D.C. on private jets, as Bill O’Reilly and others noted, but Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who has a major stake in Citigroup and also invests in the Fox News parent company, News Corporation, reportedly lives in a $100-million 317-room Riyadh palace. A nephew of Saudi King Abdullah, Alwaleed has been called the “Warren Buffett of the Gulf” and runs the Kingdom Holding Company.

Is this somebody who should be bailed out by American taxpayers?

Maria Bartiromo, CNBC’s “Money Honey” anchor and correspondent, concluded a November 24 interview with Alwaleed by thanking him for his “precious time.” He should be thanking the American people for their precious money, which they don’t have.

Bloomberg News now puts the cost of the various bailouts and other federal schemes to “save” the financial system at an incredible $7.7 trillion. That was before it was announced that the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department were pumping another $800 billion into the economy.

On CNBC, legendary investor Jim Rogers said the bailouts are “setting the stage for when we come out of this of a massive inflation holocaust.”

Announcing the Citigroup bailout, the Federal Reserve said that “With these transactions, the U.S. government is taking the actions necessary to strengthen the financial system and protect U.S. taxpayers and the U.S. economy.”

That sounds reassuring. But another and more accurate way to put it is to say that U.S. tax dollars were being pumped into a failed bank to help a Saudi prince.

As the economic problems that were mostly confined to the real estate market the past couple of years expanded to include the financial sectors and the overall economic structure this past September, I have written several of my Daily Devotionals specifically dealing with this issue, trying to help people understand that this really isn't an economic problem, but a spiritual problem.

We have watched over the past 2 months the Government come up with one failed plan after another, giving out several trillion dollars we don't have to try and fix the problem, all to no avail. Again, this is because there is not a human solution to a spiritual problem. The only real hope and answer is PRAYER! This nation must get on its knees, ask God's forgiveness, repent, turn from our sins and back to God and His Truth.

The political leadership of our nation has often called for a National Day of Prayer and Fasting in the face of great problems. This would not be unprecedented for the President and Congress to call this nation to prayer for the economy. We will do it with or without the support of the President and Congress, but it would be nice to have them acknowledge that we are a nation and people dependant upon Almighty God, and our blessings are tied directly to our relationship with our Creator.

The fact is, as I have been sharing with those in the Liveprayer family this entire year, we are out of options. We have turned our back on God, bowed down to worship and follow the false gods and idols of this world, lived our lives in absolute rebellion to Him, we are out of time. We aren't due God's wrath and judgment, we are overdue. This is our opportunity to repent of our sins, ask God to forgive us, and turn back to Him and His Truth. If we refuse to do so, than we will suffer the consequences of our sins and rebellion.

I am committed to doing what we have done daily for the past 111 months, and that is to minister to the personal needs of those we reach each day here at Liveprayer and bring people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. However, in addition to that, I have taken the yoke to lead this charge to call our nation and the nations of the world back to God and Biblical Truth. It is the only true hope we have.

Doctors' Opinion of Financial Bail Out Package

The Allergists voted to scratch it, and the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenteritis had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve, and the Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.

The Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

The Pathologists yelled, 'Over my dead body!' while the Pediatricians said, 'Oh, Grow up!'

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, the Radiologists could see right through it, and the Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, 'This puts a whole new face on the matter.'

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists felt the scheme wouldn't hold water.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists left the decision up to some assholes in Washington!
